Application Process

Welcome! We are pleased you are considering an application to South Louisiana Regional Health Education Centers' AHEC Scholars Program.

We are excited to meet you! Below you will find information that can help you through the application process.

Key Dates: 2023 Application Cycle

Applications for AHEC Scholars open each spring and close early fall.

Applications open: January 2023
Applications close: September 16, 2023
Acceptance letters: October 1, 2023
First session: October 6, 2023

About this application

Our reviewers are interested in what makes you unique: share your proudest talents, flaunt your leadership skills, and (don’t forget to) tell us about your commitment to primary care. We are also checking for structure, grammar, and spelling because we are total sticklers.

This application will collect basic demographic data, information about your training, and a few essay questions that will help us get to know you.

To complete this application you will need:

• A Gmail account

• Your demographic data and contact information

• A pdf of your CV or resume

Section 1 - Demographic Data

Demographic data, contact information, and program of study.
We need this information for reporting purposes (and so we know what and how to call you).

Section 2 - About You

This section is designed to allow reviewers to get to know you. Applications from students from rural or underserved backgrounds receive additional weight.

Section 3 - Short Essay

A successful essay will demonstrate your commitment to primary care in rural and/or underserved populations and should be 750-1,000 words each.

  • Essay 1: Describe the experiences, reasons and/or events that led you to choose a career in health care (20pts)

  • Essay 2: Explain why you are interested in applying to the South Louisiana AHEC Scholars Program (20pts)

  • Essay 3: Do you have additional skills you would like considered in this application? (Up to 4pts)
    This question is an opportunity for us to get to know parts of you that were not highlighted in other areas of the application. It is not required, but it is useful, and could be worth an additional 4 points.

Section 4 - References

Indicate the name of at least one professional reference and their contact information (Reference is worth up to 4 points).

Section 5 - Upload CV or Resume
